Used for thousands of years by natural healers and alternative medicine practices for various health purposes, Peppermint Essential Oil (Metha x piperita - also known as Mentha balsamea Wild) is one of the most utilized oils for headaches. Peppermint oil also eases the nausea and upset tummy that often accompany migraines, and similar to a cold compress, has a pleasing cooling effect on your skin which inhibits muscle contractions in neck and head. The compound menthol is responsible for this, which makes up over 40% of this oil, and has been shown to relax muscles, ease pain, and affect mucus receptors in the nose. Peppermint remedies can re-open the sinuses, which helps you breathe more clearly. This leads to increased oxygenation to the bloodstream. This last benefit aids greatly with sinus headaches as it helps clear the sinus cavity. Lab studies have also shown that peppermint oil may fight bacteria and reduce inflammation. These are just a sample of reasons that make Peppermint Essential Oil a wonderful choice for headache relief.
