Top Three Essential Oils For A Good Night’s Sleep
We all know that getting a good night’s rest plays a supremely important role in maintaining our health. Adults need between seven and ten hours of sleep every night. Whether we like it or not, or have time for it or not, sleep is an essential part of keeping our mental, emotional, and physical well being at peak levels. According to the National Institute of Health, due to our fast-paced society, the average adult is getting way less than seven hours of sleep each night. Contrary to what some believe, our bodies do not “shut down” while we are asleep. They were created to need this time, nearly one-third of our lives, to make our waking hours the most productive and healthy they can be! Our brain and heart health, immune system, productivity, emotional balance, creativity, vitality, and even our weight is directly affected by how much sleep we get. While many people suffer from insomnia, there are also those who suffer from what I’ll call “Can’t Turn My Brain Off Syndrome”. Even after climbing under the covers and shutting our eyes, our minds go round and round, making it difficult to drift off into our necessary slumber. Believe it or not, Insomnia isn’t a condition, but a symptom. Chronic insomnia may very well need to be addressed between you and your physician. However, if you have implemented all of the methods known to ensure a good night’s sleep (such as keeping a consistent sleep time routine, having a cool, dark environment, staying away from late night meals, caffeine or alcohol, and exercising regularly), yet you still find yourself dealing with acute insomnia (bouts of trouble falling or staying asleep), there are many natural ways to help with this. According to the CDC, nearly nine million adults take prescription sleeping aids. Nine MILLION people ingesting pharmaceuticals so they can sleep at night. The good news is that for those of us seeking to live as healthy and natural as possible, there are lots of other options! There are teas, meditation, and our specialty, Organic Essential Oils! Numerous oils have proven to be an effective alternative to popping pills before bed, and although there are many to choose from, we’ll be sharing the Top Three Essential Oils for a Good Nite’s Sleep…
Lavender (Lavendula)
A widely popular organic essential oil used in aromatherapy, Lavender is one of the most well known and universally studied botanicals created. Its uses as a medicinal herb are endless, and unsurprisingly, one of the favorites is as a sleep aid. Studies have shown that Lavender is an anxiolytic (an anxiety reliever), and works as a sedative to bring about relaxation and sleep, while also improving sleep quality. Now being used as a complementary medicine for sleeplessness in hospital ICUs and CCUs rather than sleeping pills, this holistic gift is proving itself as an evidence-based alternative. Often turned to for relief from anxiety, restlessness and depression, which are frequently associated with insomnia, Lavender oil increases slow-wave sleep (SWS), slowing the heart rate and relaxing the muscles. SWS is the stage where our bodies perform duties such as muscular repair and growth. Studies have also shown that it significantly increases blood melatonin levels naturally! Lavender oil has been studied for its inhalation benefits, and has shown to not only increase SWS, but also stage two sleep, or “light sleep”. This is where our bodies heal and memories are catalogued. It is during stage two sleep where we are most likely to be disturbed or awakened, and Lavender has shown to be a great option for those who struggle with restlessness and being easily woken by the least little thing. It is a wonderful, natural alternative that is safe to use for the whole family, children included!
Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
In the Western World, Chamomile is one of the most widely used medicinal plants around. We’ve all been advised to “have a cup of Chamomile Tea” before bed or when we’re feeling stressed, however, the aromatherapeutic use of Essential Oil of Chamomile is proving to be even more effective. Best known for its hypnotic properties, Roman Chamomile is known to promote a sense of calm and relaxation as well as induce sleep. A sleep study showed how this extract lowers stress hormones & the hypnotic activity is similar to the effects of benzodiazepines (think Xanax and Ativan), but minus the risk of dependency or side effects! So much more than an “Old Wive’s Tale”, research has proven Chamomile to be extremely effective in reducing stress & anxiety, both of which are often attributed to sleeplessness. Also safe for children, mothers have been using this oil to help their little ones sleep for centuries!
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)
Famous for treating insomnia, especially the sort caused by anxiety, Essential Oil of Sweet Orange is a wonderful way to promote Sweet Dreams! Once again, another oil safe and helpful for children (as well as sleepless adults) is this delightfully smelling oil. While many other citrusy scents can be overstimulating, Sweet Orange has a very calming and soothing effect. It’s sedative, anti-anxiety and anti-depression properties help relax the mind and body, allowing for an easier time drifting off.
